Daughter of the Silver Moon by Marieke Frankema ~ Review

Every young woman in the village cherishes the dream of being crowned Daughter of the Silver Moon and receive the magic that keeps the village safe.

For Mara, that dream is so unattainable that she doesn’t even think about it. Everything that goes wrong in the village is blamed on her, starting with her mother’s death, her father’s disappearance and accidents involving fire. Accused of having wild magic and bullied for being different, Mara doesn’t even consider becoming a Daughter, not even when she finds out that her mother was one of the best Daughters in history. All she wants is to be ordinary.

The only one who cares about Mara is Aza, the Sage of the village. She tells Mara stories about her parents, but anxiously keeps her own secrets to herself.

As the bullying intensifies, Mara unravels more and more shreds of the truth. Is she really the dangerous witch everyone takes her for? Did she have something to do with her mother’s murder? Who is the silver phantom who seems to be on her side? And what does Aza have to do with all this?

Daughter of the Silver Moon is an award-winning clean fantasy romance stand-alone with subtle magic and a lot of heart.

I loved this book!!! It has an “it takes a village” vibe right from the start where everyone works together as a community to heal and teach and thrive to the rhythm of the magical ebbs and flows of the moon cycle. It’s basically everything I’ve ever dreamed of. They garden, they sew, they make medicine from flowers, herbs, and roots, they tend to each other’s properties and health needs, they hold meetings to discuss who needs help around the village, they have a moon ceremony to crown a healing queen of the year called “daughter of the moon” … it’s all so lovely!

Except that one of them is outcast because she’s “the white one” with skin as light as the moon that actually sometimes glows in the moonlight. In typical human fashion, people judge and fear what they do not understand so this “white one”, Mara, is assumed to be cursed and evil even though she is only a child. She finds herself the victim of cult mindset bullying and is often in the wrong place at the wrong time that ends up getting blamed on her.

The journey that we get to take with her as she battles these accusations, stands up to these bullies, and finds her inner strength and purpose is absolutely inspiring. It’s a beautiful coming of age story that is paralleled with a second timeline that dives into the past. In this flashback timeline we learn about Mara’s parents when they were alive and we observe more about these moon rituals and how they formed the paths we see in the current timeline.

If you like any kind of magical realism, inner strength journey type of story then I definitely recommend my new favorite book!!!
