Maris bargained with Death.
Her soul in exchange for her brother’s.
Malakai is a reaper bound by duty and burdened by guilt. When he attempts to claim her soul, it resists him. Unable to take it, he marks her instead, binding them together in ways neither fully understands.
Forced to reap souls, Maris is drawn into a hidden world between life and death.
But when she unknowingly stumbles upon ancient language carved into stone, she fractures a seal meant to remain untouched. Something long imprisoned begins to stir, and its corruption starts to spread.
Now the bargain that saved her brother may cost far more than her soul… and the fragile bond forming between her and Malakai.
Because some bargains cannot be undone.
And some loves are powerful enough to defy death itself.

This one found me in the best possible way. A bookstagrammer reached out and said my account looked like exactly the kind of place this book belonged, and honestly she was not wrong. The cover pulled me in immediately, the vibe was everything, and the synopsis sealed the deal. When a book feels like it was made for you before you even open it, that is a very good sign. The Story
Soul Bargain drops you into a world of shadows and cold stone, family drama and buried secrets, and a grim reaper who is supposed to be the villain but carries something far more complicated underneath the surface. The first half of the story builds a really solid foundation of conflict and inner journey before sweeping us away to the underworld for the second half, where the stakes shift and the tension takes on a completely different shape. This is gothic paranormal romance with real atmosphere and genuine darkness, and it delivers on that promise.
Reading Experience
I loved most of this book. The characters were addicting, the plot was dark and intriguing, the tension was absolutely delicious, and the stakes were high enough that I genuinely could not stop reading. The writing style put me right inside every moment. I could see the cold stony underworld, I could feel the lurking shadows, and my heart was racing with the danger and anticipation throughout. When a book makes you feel like you are physically inside it that is something special and Kovessa Nighte does that really well.
Characters
Maris is one of those protagonists I just fell for immediately. She is unique and quirky and sarcastic and despite a painful relationship with her mother she carries herself with this front of inner strength even when she is internally trembling. That contrast, the bravado over the vulnerability, made her feel so real and so easy to root for.
And then there is Malakai. First of all that name and that specific spelling are everything to me. He is dark and mysterious and brooding, undead yet somehow deeply human, positioned as evil but radiating empathy underneath all of it. He is suffering and you can feel it and all you want to do is root for him even when you probably should not.
The chemistry between the two of them is electric. Absolutely electric. I will leave it at that.
Themes and Tone
This book is steeped in death and dying, in regret and what we leave behind, in love as a force that exists even in the darkest and most unlikely places. There is also a really beautiful thread about inner strength running through Maris’s journey, about what it means to keep going when everything inside you is shaking. The underworld setting gives all of these themes room to breathe in a way that felt atmospheric and earned rather than heavy handed.

Final Thoughts
Soul Bargain is a genuinely atmospheric, dark, and addicting gothic paranormal read that I really liked. The writing is immersive, the characters are magnetic, and the tension in the first half especially is some of the most delicious slow burn I have read in a while. My one honest note is that the second half leaned heavily into the romance and I found myself wanting more of the gritty plot, more of the dark lord conflict, more of the underworld mythology. The spicy moments are well written but for me personally the story was strongest when the plot and the romance were balanced against each other rather than the romance taking center stage. Less of that and more of the darkness this world is clearly capable of and this would have been a five star read for me without question. As it stands it is a very solid and very enjoyable book that I would absolutely recommend to anyone who loves gothic paranormal fiction with heat, heart, and real atmosphere.

Kovessa enjoys the world of dark paranormal, gothic fantasy, mafia and any other delightfully shadowy romances. If it involves morally grey men, fierce women or stories that make you question where you need therapy or a sequel, she’s there. Her stories are a mix of late-night wandering thoughts, lots of caffeine, midnight plot twists, and wicked ideas that whisper: “yeah… lets write that.”
When she isn’t writing, she’s a coffee addict, outdoor explorer, and spends time with her family on their farm.
