Review: The Tradwife’s Lie by Bella Ellwood-Clayton

Synopsis:

In Westbrook, tradwives are currency. Belonging has a price.

And the most dangerous thing a woman can do is change her mind.

I didn’t come here to be brave.

I came to disappear.

After New York, after the firm, after everything that broke me, Westbrook felt safe. Predictable. A place where the rules were clear, and someone else made the decisions.

I became a tradwife. My husband is a doctor. He’s a lot older than me. But he’s kind, and caring. Maybe too caring.

I learned how this town really works — the rankings, the favors, the silence. I learned when to smile, when to look away, and which questions never get asked.

Now I’m pregnant. But I can’t tell my husband.

Now I know what happened to the women who stepped out of line.

And now I understand the truth:

Westbrook isn’t about tradition. It’s about control.

AN INTOXICATING BLEND OF TENSION AND SUSPENSE WITH AN ENDING YOU WON’T SEE COMING.

This was so good. The tradwife thriller theme is gaining real momentum right now and even within that growing space this book held such a mysterious quality to it. I genuinely had no idea where the twists were going to pop up or how things were going to be revealed. It kept me completely on my toes from start to finish.

If you discovered that the perfect community you had joined was built entirely on secrets and control, would you stay and fight or find a way out?

The Story

The Tradwife’s Lie is set in Westbrook, a community where tradwives are currency and belonging comes at a price. Our narrator comes to Westbrook after everything in her previous life broke her, looking for something predictable, something safe, somewhere the rules are clear and someone else makes the decisions. But she slowly learns how this town really works. The rankings, the favors, the silence. The questions that never get asked. And what happens to the women who step out of line.

Reading Experience

Think Stepford Wives for the 21st century. These are tradwife influencers, perfect and put together on the outside, but underneath that polished surface there are juicy secrets steaming right below. Blackmail, adultery, murder, lies and more lies. I could not stop listening. The audiobook experience pulled me completely into this world and kept me hooked all the way through.

The community itself has a real M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village energy to it. Culty, controlling, and chilling around every misstep. These characters are living in a self-made, self-glorified utopia where their reality is truly no one else’s reality. And somehow that makes it even more unsettling.

Content warnings: workplace SA, murder, infidelity, fertility struggles, and heavy psychological tension.

Characters

Even within that cult-like, mannequin-esque vibe, these are real humans with real feelings, real desires, and real secrets. And with that level of suppression and those unrealistic expectations of perfection pressing down on everyone, it is no wonder they are all quietly falling apart.

We get a few POVs telling this story but my absolute favorite is Simone. She goes in completely unafraid to dissect this community and get to the bottom of what happened to her long lost friend Marni. I loved her for it.

Heartbeat

You cannot escape your trauma by running from it or pretending it does not exist. You have to face it head on and work through it to heal. That is the truth living underneath all the twists and all the tension in this book. Every character in Westbrook is running from something and Westbrook itself is built on that very impulse. What happens when you can no longer outrun what you came here to escape is what this story is really about.

Final Thoughts

The Tradwife’s Lie is a twisty, tense, deeply satisfying psychological thriller that I would recommend to any thriller lover. Bella Ellwood-Clayton writes secrets and control and the dark side of curated perfection with real skill and an ending I absolutely did not see coming. I have not read anything else by her yet but after this I am very much looking forward to what she does next.

I listened to this one as an audiobook and it was a fantastic way to experience it.
