Wow. Just wow. This book had twists like no other. Just when I thought we had fully twisted, bam, another twist spun me completely on my head. I ate this book up. Except for a couple of times when things got intense enough that I had to set it down and collect myself.
If someone showed up at your door in the middle of the night with a connection to your past, would you let them in or slam the door shut?

Reading Experience
I forgot to breathe so many times reading this book. I would finish a chapter and realize I needed to take a big gasp of air just to fill my lungs. There were also several times I had to put the book down and recollect myself and bring myself back to reality because it was just so intense. And I read it so fast. I could not get enough of it.
Writing Style
Liv Lowry did a fantastic job painting a picture of Lily before and Lily now. The before passages felt like walking in these characters’ shoes in real time, experiencing traumatic events at this school as they unfolded. And as detailed and revealing as those passages were, she still maintained this mysterious, elusive quality. We were given information but there were always pieces missing that we had not discovered yet.
The Lily now sections were a fast paced, heart racing, adrenaline pumping cat and mouse horror story. The details were so vivid that at one point a character was stabbed in the hand with a glass shard and I actually had to put the book down and flex my own hand because it started hurting. That is how realistic, and at times graphic, these details were. But everything remained shrouded in mystery. You were never quite sure how everything was going to piece together or who people really were or why this was all happening.
And the twists. Oh my gosh, the twists. They just kept twisting. Every single time I thought this was the big reveal, no, another twist would come and flip everything completely on its end and give me a totally different perspective. And then I would think that was the reality unfolding. And then no, another twist. Miraculously they all made sense. None of them felt over the top or like she was reaching. They were outrageous and extraordinary in just the right way.
Characters
I want to talk about my favorite characters carefully, without giving away a single twist, because I genuinely cannot give anything away here.
Lily before and Lily now are both so compelling. I loved Lily. She was so sweet and genuine and authentic, wanting to see the kindness in everybody and wanting to trust everybody. She carried so much grief inside her from loss and from not really having anyone she could trust, and she wanted that so badly. And we all know what happens when you trust the wrong people. Lily now shows us a much tougher, much stronger, much more independent version. She does not see the world so innocently anymore. She does not trust as easily. She fights harder. She stands up for herself stronger. Watching those parallels unfold was genuinely intriguing.
Clementine, or Clem, was my absolute favorite. I loved how snarky and empowered she always seemed to be, even though she had also been handed the short end of the stick throughout her life many times. She was constantly in situations where the rug got pulled out from under her, or she was misunderstood or mistreated, and she became such a powerhouse in the face of all of that. I loved watching their friendship unfold, how they brought out the best in each other and challenged the worst in each other.
In the Lily now timeline, she has two newer friends, sisters, who were so genuine and empathetic toward Lily and everything she had gone through, including the PTSD and panic attacks still affecting her. They were sweet and gentle and welcoming, inviting her in like family, bringing her along on this trip meant to bond and heal. It is so tragic that a getaway meant for that kind of bonding turned into such a nightmare.
There is so much more depth to these characters and their relationships and their backstories than I can put into words here, because so much of it needs to remain a secret until it is the right time to know it.
Heartbeat
There are a couple of heartbeats in this book and I resonate deeply with them.
The first is that your experiences, your traumas, the toxic people in your life, the loss you have carried, the grief you hold, none of that has to define you. It affects you. It shapes you. It molds you. But you get to decide what the end result of that journey is going to be. You can choose to be warm and compassionate and empathetic. You can choose to be cold and jaded and shut off. Or you can let those experiences shape you without ever making a conscious choice at all. I love the reality of how people can go through truly horrific things and come out the other side strong and capable… or psychotic and completely dangerous.
The second heartbeat is found family versus true family, which seems to be a favorite theme of mine lately. True family is not always the support you need or the bond you hope for. But when you have cultivated a solid found family, the way Lily and Clem did, the question becomes what you are willing to do and how far you are willing to go to protect that sacred bond. And how far is too far?
Final Thoughts
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dark, intense, deeply psychological thrillers that twist you completely around and upside down and back again. I also recommend her first book, Pretty Dead Things, which has very similar dark psychological mystery vibes but with a completely different cast of characters, personalities, and circumstances. You can really feel the difference between them, the difference in their stories, and Liv Lowry writes grief, pain, and psychosis so well.
I loved Pretty Dead Things so much that I was genuinely a little worried going into this one. I had absolutely no reason to worry. Easily five stars and then some. Can’t wait to read whatever you have coming next, Liv!
