Reading Experience

I read this book quickly, with wide eyes, a held breath, a racing heart, and at times tears streaming down my face.

Writing Style

We experience the story of missing Melanie seventeen years after it happened, when her sister Sunny has finally had enough and goes back to look for anything that might give her answers. What is so unique about the way Patricia Dixon writes this is that so much time has passed, and yet all of the flashbacks, the pain, the loss, the questions live on as though it happened only yesterday. That contrast between the years that have gone by and the grief that never actually moves is one of the most powerful things about this book.

Characters

Sunny is the heart of this book. She lost her sister and a cold case was simply never an outcome she was willing to live with. She spiraled for seventeen years, she was a mess, but she needed answers. I loved her right from the beginning. Her pain was so evident, and honestly I cannot blame her for losing the will to do much else with her life. She lost the one person who meant the most to her and had no idea how it happened, yet she still held onto hope that Melanie might be out there somewhere, and nothing was going to stop her from finding out the truth all these years later.

Then there is Nanette, whose story broke my heart into a million little pieces. She was Melanie’s best friend, and the aftermath of losing her turned Nanette’s own life into a nightmare. You have to have a strong stomach to read her story, and even then it is a challenge. I could cry even writing this, remembering everything these women have been through.

What stuck out to me most across the entire cast is that even the characters with wealth and status, the ones who seemingly have it all together on the outside, are all suffering with grief, trauma, or their own personal demons on some level. Nobody in this book is untouched.

Heartbeat

The heartbeat of this story is, unfortunately, abuse and how little is done for the victims. Whether emotional, physical, or otherwise, abuse is far more common than we would like to believe, and victims are rarely protected or, in some cases, ever found. Patricia Dixon does not look away from that truth, and neither should we.

Final Thoughts

I would recommend this book to readers who are not afraid to read about sensitive topics that are real and gut-wrenchingly raw. This story lingered with me in a way very few books have, and I think Sunny and Nanette will stay with me for a long time to come.

Please note this book deals with themes of abuse and its lasting impact. Go in with that awareness.
