Review: Bad Moon Rising
Synopsis:

Rock and roll relationships are complicated. They’re even worse when one of you is a werewolf.

Kat’s band has just landed the best gig of their career at Dusk. And the instant chemistry between her and the charismatic manager is undeniable — but so are the secrets he’s keeping. Secrets that come with sharp teeth.

As the rival wolves close in and old grudges resurface, Stevie realises it isn’t just his pack at risk. It’s the woman he loves.Witty, romantic, and gripping, Bad Moon Rising is the third book in The Immortals of London series– where feelings run wild and loyalty can cost you everything.

Vampires and werewolves? Yes please. That is genuinely all it took. This is my favorite corner of the paranormal world and I will always say yes to a book that lives in it. Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for having me on this tour.

The Story

Bad Moon Rising is the third book in The Immortals of London series by Berni Stevens. It follows Kat, the lead singer of a rock band who lands the gig of her career at Dusk, a London nightclub managed by the charming and secretive Stevie Vane. The chemistry between them is immediate and undeniable. So are the secrets Stevie is keeping, secrets that involve a werewolf pack, rival wolves closing in, and a world Kat is about to be pulled into whether she is ready or not.

Reading Experience

I could get completely lost in this kind of world and this book let me do exactly that. It read quickly because there was always something interesting happening, nightclub life, band life, werewolf pack dynamics, vampires, romance. Multiple layers of plot running at once kept everything moving and kept me engaged. What I love most about this genre is the fierce loyalty that runs through these found family dynamics. When you are part of a select group sharing secrets that the rest of the world does not know about, it creates this bond that I find deeply compelling to read about every single time.

The book is primarily written from Kat’s first person perspective, which works really well for pulling you into her experience. However there are also occasional passages written in third person from other characters’ perspectives, and that shift was a little off for me. I found myself sometimes confused about whose mind we were in. I would have personally preferred either staying entirely in Kat’s first person view or having dedicated chapters from each character’s perspective written consistently. That said it genuinely did not affect my enjoyment of the book. It was a minor quirk in an otherwise very enjoyable read.

The dialogue and character voices throughout are witty, sharp, and deeply human. Which is ironic given that most of these characters are anything but. People are sarcastic, funny, and they make real mistakes. It all felt very lived in and natural.

Characters

The characters were my favorite parts of this book. Each one had their own distinct personality and history. The contrast between the werewolf characters, who leaned gruff and playful and a little more animal, and the vampire characters, who were more refined and controlled, was really fun to read. The human characters caught in the middle had this “what is even going on here” energy that balanced everything out nicely.

I loved Kat. She is warm and relatable and easy to root for. My one honest note is about how readily she accepted the revelation that the people around her were werewolves and vampires. I wanted just a little more inner turmoil from her. Not fear exactly, and it did not need to be overplayed, but a little more of the realness of that moment. A little more “wait, is this even real, can I trust these people, what does this mean.” Because part of what makes these creatures so compelling is how immortal and powerful and genuinely mystical they are. When a human just kind of rolls with it too easily it takes a little of that magic away. But that is a small note on a character I otherwise genuinely loved.

Themes and Tone

This is not a deeply thematic book and it does not need to be. It is a witty, romantic, gripping paranormal story about werewolves and vampires and the very human things that happen when worlds collide. It is fun and fast and entertaining and that is exactly what it sets out to be. Sometimes that is precisely what you need.

Final Thoughts

Bad Moon Rising is a really enjoyable paranormal romance that I would absolutely recommend. It is also worth noting that even though this is book three in The Immortals of London series it reads completely as a standalone. I did not feel like I was missing context from the earlier books at all, which I really appreciated. But because this one was so good I now very much want to go back and read the first two. From what I can tell each book follows a different character which makes the whole series sound like a really fun world to keep exploring. A solid yes from me.

Berni Stevens lives in an ancient cottage in Hertfordshire, which sounds like it’s in the depths of the countryside, but really isn’t (because the green bits keep getting built on!)

Berni spent four years at art college in Sussex before starting her first job in publishing as a book cover and promotions designer and then solely as a book cover designer for many of the big London publishers. She’s now freelance, and designs for both publishers and many self-published authors. Although she still makes sure to leave time for her writing, and various hobbies. Berni was a finalist for the RNA Cover Designer of the Year Award both in 2021 and 2023.

Berni’s first full-length novel was a paranormal romance, called Fledgling, which was first published in the US in 2011, and retitled Dance Until Dawn, made its UK debut three years later, followed by the sequel, Revenge is Sweet and so beginning the Immortals of London series.

Veering away from the paranormal for a while, Berni’s first festive RomCom, One Magical Christmas, took some people by surprise – including herself. So much so, that she wrote three more!

With the re-appearance of the Romantasy genre … a new paranormal romance has finally broken free – Bad Moon Rising – the third book in the Immortals of London series.
